James Martin was born on 10th October 1931 in Southsea.  He was a  prolific artist, teacher, skilled painter, theatre designer, ceramicist and potter, as well as serving as a British spy and was an active supporter of the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Martin was considered by many to be a modern Renaissance Man. A long standing resident of Balham, he had a beautifully styled home in the area and whilst he welcomed those who loved to see his pictures, he chose not to sell any of his work.

He died on 18 October 2015 and now some of his highly original and unique paintings are available to view and buy from The Irène Laksine Gallery.
